Chapter 10
Silver
Going back to Greenacre meant facing her fears. It meant either severing the link that bound her to Domhnall or finding a way to live with it. She couldnât see herself finding a way, not even when she brought it up at a gathering of the women one evening. They all said people could change. Physically, Domhnall found out that he was a shifter. Historically, heâd been born into tremendous generational wealth, but heâd also been carrying around the weight of ghosts that were decades old without even knowing it.
She was so worried that sheâd have to face Domhnall immediately, but she and Roan and the girls made the trip back to Greenacre by mid-September. The leaves were already burning scarlet and orange and yellow. But, as September turned into October, those leaves fell with stiff breezes and cooler rains, and still, no Domhnall.
She was almost growing restless thinking about it. Dwelling on anything too long was a terrible idea. She would love nothing more than to pick him out of her. He had no right being anywhere inside of her. Not her brain and not her past and not whatever spaces were still there to be filled up in her chest. The dread of that meeting was worse than the actual person, she decided.
As October neared the end, Silver finally let out a breath.
If Domhnall hadnât come by then, then he wasnât going to.
She stopped waiting. She stopped worrying. She stopped framing her day around the possibility that he might jump out at her andâyeah. He wouldnât do that. He wouldnât hide in the bushes and freaking ambush her. But she had stopped looking for him on her doorstep every time she opened her door. The shadows in the early morning and late evening ceased to be him.
Heâd left Greenacre. Heâd given the land back to Sam and the rest of the clan. Despite knowing that he was a shifter, Domhnall chose the world he was born into. He chose to be human. He chose money and his business and his family in Florida. Heâd apparently put what happened in Greenacre behind him.
Heâd put her behind him.
Maybe they werenât mates at all.
Maybe it was just the weird blood thing Roan talked about at the cottage in Maine.
Mate or not, heâd made his choice. It was to live without her. And that was⦠a relief.
Silver left a mug of mint tea brewing on the counter in the kitchen. Sheâd knitted a new sweater in Maine. Another black one, but sheâd chosen a heavier, softer yarn. The sweater probably weighed more than she did, but it kept her warm. Sheâd forgotten, over the summer, how much it rained in Seattle. She thought the ocean created strong winds and rains in the fall, but sheâd nearly wiped clean the memories of the cold that sunk into the bones, icy winds and fresh rain sweeping off the mountains. Sheâd forgotten how Seattleâs air was so fresh and crisp, not salt tinged. One
